Baking Soda: The Secret Ingredient to Cutting Concrete's Carbon Footprint?

According to a recent study, adding baking soda to concrete slurry can reduce the material's embodied carbon by up to 15%. The study was conducted by the CarbonCure Technologies, a company specializing in carbon capture and utilization in concrete production.

The researchers found that adding small amounts of baking soda to the slurry during mixing produces tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide gas, which create tiny voids in the concrete. This, in turn, reduces the amount of cement needed for the same strength, and therefore lowers the carbon footprint of the material.

According to Jennifer Wagner, director of sustainability at CarbonCure, "By adding baking soda, we're producing a more sustainable concrete mix that has a lower carbon footprint, without sacrificing performance or quality."

Reducing embodied carbon is becoming increasingly important in the construction industry, as it is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions globally. The study suggests that using baking soda in concrete production could be a simple and effective way to reduce the industry's carbon footprint.

The findings of this study have significant implications for the construction industry, as it is a simple and cost-effective solution to reducing the carbon footprint of concrete production. As Jennifer Wagner noted, "It's a low-hanging fruit in terms of sustainability."
